Be a good missionary there just like you would be a good missionary anywhere: Follow the rules and be led by the spirit. :)

Colombian Mormon denied political asylum

calico 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Some people like to use their religion as an excuse for being persecuted. Some times it's true and some times it's not. In this particular case, it seems it was just coincidence mostly because there are a lot of mormons there and I haven't heard of them being "targeted" in that country before.

I think it's safe to say that once people are ready and living the law of consecration, they will be much more open-minded to other higher eternal laws.

This is a good point. To me, plural marriage is a relevant aspect of the law of consecration insomuch that it is being totally selfless with your husband and wife and sharing them with another. No, not just physically, but emotionally as well. So it makes sense that consecration would help to prepare others' hearts for that higher law of plural marriage.

I don't know who Harry Reid is. And to be honest, I didn't read the article, I just skimmed over some of what cookiecaper said and saw he thought Glenn Beck would be the best option and thought I would comment on that. :) ...Please don't give me any look of disapprovals.

That's sad Glenn Beck would be the best option. To me, he's not a very good example of how a practicing mormon should carry himself.

"Get Active or I'm Leaving With the Kids"

calico 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Wow. Interesting article.

I think giving an ultimatum like this is a bit extreme and not what a person struggling with their testimony needs to hear from their wife. They need understanding and love. They need discussion and counseling (from a bishop) instead of a wife saying "I want you active and temple recommend holding in a year or I'm leaving you". That's just plain rude.

I hope that was a hypothetical situation.

Preparing to live the higher law

I was also recently on a forum containing a discussion such as this. It was upsetting to see how many of the people on this thread had no ability to comprehend the messages that were being shared. They were appalled at the idea of living up to their covenants to submit all they have to the Lord and the progression of the gospel when called to do so.

| "Let me have the inferior exaltation and you can have my wives". This is their choice. If they want this for their eternity, let them have it. It's what they want, what they are willing to give, so that is what they will get. Your rewards are generally equal to the faith and effort you put into getting those rewards. If they want more, they should give more.

Kudos to you for being righteous enough to know that being prepared and willing to give whatever the Lord asks of you is key to your eternal progression. :)

I like that idea. Thank you. I'll give the whole making it more interactive idea a try, but piping up in class for a lot of the questions tends to irritate people and make them think you're a know-it-all. But then again, I'm back at the ward I grew up in and I always answered all the questions when I was younger, so maybe they'll still think it's cute..

I don't think that expunging it is really the way to go because it violates free speech which is part of everyone's constitutional right. Mormons are supposed to stand for and advocate freedoms like that. Also, mormons are supposed to emit a christlike attitude towards their fellow man no matter how wrong they think the other person is. And "towards their fellow man" includes those who are speaking against Obama and Bush and others. Keep it nice. You can state your opinion without getting angry or overly excited about the issue. When you do this, it diminishes the view that non-mormons have about mormons being self-righteous and hypocritical and such. :)

That being said, a good way to help get your personal opinion out there is to post your views to these sites so that an opposing opinion may be heard. I've noticed people tend to go with the flow on blogs and things like that out of wanting acceptance from others and out of fear of being ostrisized(sp?) for their differing opinions. But do it in a respectful way that doesn't belittle others views no matter how silly or wrong you may think they are. That's what these sites are for, to expand your knowledge and learn of others' perspectives and beliefs.

Also, I didn't read through all the links, mainly glazed over them so if something I wrote doesn't seem to apply, that's probably why.

This is what I like about Ron Paul. He does what he says and is consistent with his view points and stands up for what HE believes in. Sure he would like to get more votes and more people on his side, but he doesn't sacrifice his honor for them. Hopefully he never will. We need more people involved in politics that actually care about upholding the constitution of our country more than getting votes and getting rich. Just about the only people you find in the major parties are there for the $$ which is disappointing to say the least. Some hide it better than others, which is why it is SO important for Latter Day Saints to really find out what it going on and do their research on the leaders that have been elected.

The ultimate goal of the church is share the gospel, not to convert the world. You can except it or don't and that's all there is to it.

calico 1 point2 points 8 months ago[-]

Good point. If you want the fancy, 500 guest list sort of wedding filled with pretty flowers and expensive clothing, go for it if you really think it is so much more important than the intimate, eternal ceremony that you put it higher on your priority list than the eternal one. That may be a bit harsh.
