I've noticed that it's been slow around here. I really should be more vigilant about cross-posting from r/lds.

San Diego Mormon temple getting touch-up

peter [S] 0 points1 point 3 months ago[-]

It's a newspaper website. The supposedly reputable old guard media websites have comment threads that are almost as bad as 4chan.

Just for the record, Meridian Magazine is not canonized scripture and just because an author has the name "McConkie" doesn't make her writings doctrine. Why do Mormon feminists insist on elevating Eve and women to a superior position over Adam and males?

In addition to her logic fallacies and self-contradictions, she extrapolates doctrine that doesn't exist.

If you mean the author, his name is James Summerhays. I don't know if the sex of the author is relevant, but I thought I might clarify.

Relocating: Why we should build chapels with access to public transit

peter [S] 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

I think proximity to public transportation routes should be a factor in chapel location decisions, though certainly not the exclusive or predominating factor. My previous bishop's family had only one vehicle, so he traveled to church by bus the majority of the time. The fact that he could make it work is admirable.

It's really only an issue in more urban environments, but proximity to public transit can also help college age kids and young single adults, who often don't have cars and are just starting to establish church attendance habits of their own.

This time of year, when I hear CES, I'm thinking Vegas rather than SLC. :-)

Really long and asinine discussion on the future of polygamy and what you should be doing about it

Ugh. Too long. I'm sort of interested, but the length and high probability of irritation is going to keep me away.

IamA Person Who Can't For The Life Of Me Stay Alert And Awake During Church

Yeah, I feel the same way about overly participating. Some boring lessons would require more participation than would be appropriate in order to keep my attention.

I had that problem in college, although it was due more to my lack of sleep than boring classes. You may have gotten out of the habit of extended concentration. Focusing on one thing for long periods of time is kind of a lost skill, especially if your job or home life involves a lot of multi-tasking.

Here's my advice: make your church attendance more interactive. The obvious way is to answer questions and provide comments in class, but that's not always feasible and not everyone feels like piping up all the time. A better alternative may be to take notes. The late Henry Eyring had a tactic he used during boring talks or lessons: he would rewrite the talk or lesson in his head. I frequently do the same, but I jot things down on 3x5 note cards I keep in my scriptures. I usually like my version of the talk or lesson better than the one being given. I throw away most of those cards, but I file the good ones away and occasionally use that material in talks or lessons I have to give. And it definitely helps me keep my attention better.
