One minute you're exploring the ruins of an ancient biblical city, home to epic battles. Ten minutes later you're sitting under a tree with an iced coffee and a dessert you can't believe you've never experienced before.
Like many moshav cafés, getting to Lachisha is half the adventure. You're certain you've made a wrong turn, and then there it is: music playing, shady trees, and Israelis of all stripes relaxing over pizzas, salads, coffee, and pastries.
What makes Lachisha different from other outdoor cafés is the way it sprawls out. Tables, chairs, and even swings are scattered beneath trees across the property, some close and others out in the field. It doesn't seem to have defined boundaries, and wherever you decide to set up shop is sababa. Israel is known for being laid back, but the spread-out, you-do-you atmosphere at Lachisha takes it to another level.
We went to try a specific pastry called "Kinder." Not a muffin and not a babka, it’s something in between with a deliciously smooth chocolate center. Add an iced coffee, the afternoon heat, that dusty countryside, and a light breeze, and you've got peak Israeli summer.
The best way to experience Lachisha for the first time is to visit Tel Lachish National Park beforehand so you fully grasp where you are. The biblical city of Lachish once stood here, with ruins dating back more than 4,000 years. Kings fought over it, empires conquered it, and archaeologists are still uncovering epic finds from its past.
By the time you arrive at Lachisha for an iced coffee and something sweet, you're not just sitting in the countryside. You're sitting in one of the oldest stories on earth.
