By Jordan at The Zion List

Barby Tel Aviv is, by definition, the perfect music venue. Stellar acoustics, an intimate space, and a dark, gothic ambiance make it a rite of passage for music lovers in Israel.

After a thirty-year run on Kibbutz Galuyot Road, the club moved to the Jaffa Port in 2024. Although I would've loved to catch a show at the original Barby, their new digs in a renovated 1930s warehouse have all the cool character and vintage charm of a lived-in rock club.

I had the chance to experience the Barby last month with my teenaged kids. We had tickets to see one of my favorites, Tomer Yeshayahu, with doors opening at 8:30 p.m. Having been to hundreds of concerts over the years, I should've known that "8:30" really meant the band would take the stage sometime around 10:00. But with two teens ready to get the night started, we showed up early and found ourselves completely alone inside. And what a treat it was.

Upon entering this dark cavern, you're greeted by a massive circular chandelier that provides the room's only light, casting a warm, baroque glow across the plank floors. Vintage concert posters, oddball sculptures, and decades of rock memorabilia make it feel like the kind of place with stories to tell. Between the anonymous Flying V guitar hanging from the ceiling and the vintage Coca-Cola jukebox tucked into the back of the club, there's plenty to take in, even if you get there with time to spare.

Since we had the place to ourselves, we had our pick of where to stand and settled into the balcony overlooking the left side of the stage. There's a matching balcony on the opposite side, and as the crowd slowly filled in below us, it quickly became clear there wasn't a bad spot in the house. The room is intimate enough that wherever you stand, you feel connected to the band.

When Tomer finally took the stage, everything the Barby is known for came together. The acoustics were flawless, the sound crisp, and the band stood silhouetted against neon lights built into the back wall, creating the perfect technicolor backdrop.

By the second or third song, the room had transformed. The crowd, the lighting, the acoustics, and the intimacy of the space all seemed to feed off one another. That's exactly what the Barby gets right.

My kids and I had a fantastic night, and I left understanding why this venue has earned such a lasting place in Israel's music scene. The Barby doesn't ask you to watch a concert. It invites you to be part of it.
