SHLOMO HONIG - il
By Tehila at The Zion ListThere's an idea in Jewish thought that everything in creation has a Hebrew word that expresses its essence. Maybe that's why Jewish tradition has treated the written word with such extraordinary reverence. Torah scrolls, sacred texts, manuscripts, and inscriptions have carried our stories across continents and centuries. Before Jews ever encountered art in galleries, they found beauty in the shapes and forms of Hebrew letters.
That may be why Shlomo Honig's work is so compelling. There are plenty of artists who incorporate Hebrew into their work, but Honig makes Hebrew the art.
At first, you notice bold strokes stretching across the canvas. Then, slowly, the letters reveal themselves. By the time you've worked your way through the collection, the letters begin to feel like something more than language: mysterious, ancient, and alive.
Shlomo Honig reminds us that sometimes twenty-two letters are enough.
